From the beginning of VIVE Culture

We have made it a priority to seek God first in prayer. We do this collectively as a community in January through 14 Days of Prayer and Fasting as we begin a new year. Together, we faithfully seek God first, trusting in Him alone to create a lasting impact in our lives, city, church, and world. Every day we have a prayer focus and Bible verse that we are praying through together.

New to fasting or need a refresher? Prepare for prayer and fasting using the resources below.

Real relationship requires real intimacy, and prayer is where that intimacy begins. Through prayer, we draw near to God, aligning our hearts with His will and unlocking the power of heaven on earth. It’s the language of our faith, bringing vision to the unseen and producing peace and strength we need in every moment.

James 4:8 “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

Fasting is willingly abstaining from food to seek God. It creates space to grow closer to Him, align our hearts with His, and depend on His strength. Modeled by Jesus, fasting is a spiritual discipline focused on intentionality— inviting God into the spaces we create. Through fasting, we can amplify our prayers and experience deeper intimacy with Him.

OLD TESTAMENT

Joel 2:12 — Fasting as a return to God with the heart, not just ritual. “Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

Ezra 8:21 — Fasting for guidance, protection, and clarity. “We fasted and petitioned our God about this, and He answered our prayer.”

NEW TESTAMENT

Matthew 6:16–18 — Jesus teaches how to fast (with sincerity, not for show). “When you fast…your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Matthew 9:14–15 — Jesus signals fasting as a normal part of following Him after His ascension. “…Then they will fast.”

Fasting is the spiritual practice of intentionally going without food for a period of time to seek God and align our hearts with His.

FASTING

When entering a time of fasting, prayerfully consider what God is leading you to do. If you have medical concerns, consult your doctor before fasting.

— PARTIAL FAST: Abstaining from certain types of food (meat, sweets, processed foods) | Example: Daniel Fast is eating only fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water. Avoiding meats, sweets, and rich foods. Read Daniel 1:12, Daniel 10:2-3

— FULL FAST: Abstaining from all food for a specific period, such as from 6AM to 6PM or for several days. | Example: Only drinking water or clear liquids (broth)

— MEAL-SPECIFIC FAST: Choosing to skip a particular meal, like breakfast or dinner, to focus on prayer and seeking God. | Example: Fasting from food until 6 PM daily for a week.

Abstaining is the practice of temporarily giving up non-food distractions to create space to focus on God.

ABSTAINING

While fasting often involves food, abstaining can complement fasting by removing other things like technology, activities or habits that compete for our attention.

— MEDIA FAST: Avoiding all forms of entertainment media like TV, movies, streaming services (e.g. Netflix), video games, etc.

— SOCIAL MEDIA FAST: Abstaining from social platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook

  • No. While fasting traditionally involves food, abstaining from other things (like media or specific habits) can also be a meaningful way to create space for God. Pray and choose what fits your season.

  • That’s okay. Start simple. Fasting isn’t about intensity—it’s about intentionality. Even small steps can help refocus your heart.

  • Prayer and fasting aren’t about chasing feelings or trying to get God to act. God is at work even in quiet seasons.

These practices help align our hearts with Him—deepening our dependence and sharpening our ability to listen. Stay present, remain faithful, and trust what God is doing beneath the surface.

  • Pray honestly. Bring your needs, questions, gratitude, and listening posture before God. The daily devotionals can help guide your prayers.

  • Yes. The goal is faithfulness, not rigidity. Stay prayerful and flexible.

  • Take time to reflect on what God showed you. Journaling or sharing your story can help solidify what you’ve learned.
